National – Super Bowl Beers

The title of this post is misleading. Yes, I went to National on Sunday, but not to watch the Super Bowl. I haven’t bothered to pay to watch a game of any sport since I met my husband. In the past, my only reason for going to a football or hockey game was to ogle the athletes. Why buy a cow when you can get milk for free?

Unfortunately, we arrived before happy hour, which meant our pints were $8.50. However, after finishing our first round, the magical time of 3:00 o’clock permitted one more pint at the very sweet price of $5.00. My favourite beer on the list is Electric Unicorn White IPA by Philips. It’s a citrusy, pleasantly creamy beer with a 6.5% alcohol content.

L and I shared hot wings ($14). If National threw a couple more wings on the plate, I’d say this dish is a winner. But I’m a cheapie, so I’ll just say you pay for what you get. The sauce was hot but not mouth burning. It tasted like perhaps lime or citrus was added to a hot sauce, making it more sophisticated in flavouring than my usual 35 cent wings at Newcastle Pub.

I wanted something else to snack on, so I ordered tater tots ($7.00). These were hot, munchy and perfectly crunchy. These tots inspired me to stop by Safeway and pick up a whole bag of frozen tots for $2.25 (Compliments brand).

During happy hour, you can choose from east coast or west coast oysters for only $1.00. Naturally, I picked the west coast because I like my oysters creamy and sweet. Each sea treasure was shucked properly, not one contained any shell fragment.

What will bring me back to National again and again are the buck a shuck oysters. For now, this is my new favourite place for happy hour oysters.
